Q: chevy caprice?
i have a 1987 chevy caprice thats sitting in my driveway for 6 years do u think i should junk it it dont start and don't know how to get it started the oil is dark black electricity goes into car but cars engine wont turn junk or save
A: It probably won't start because all of the oil is drained out into the pan, and nothing is sitting on the pistons anymore. You could always try to pull the distributor and try to prime the oil pump yourself.
Depending on your situation, it may be worth playing around with. If you have the time, money and room, and don't need a car immediately, then you could play around with it. These are some of the most common cars on the road (think taxis, police, official use, etc.), so parts can be found EVERYWHERE and for cheap. There are probably Caprice specific junk yards out there too I'll bet.
If it's not worth the time and money to you, then just ditch it with the rest of 'em, but it'd be easy to play around with.
Q: What is the most economical way to upgrade my engine on a 1989 Chevy Caprice Classic?
I have decided to take my 1989 chevy caprice to the max. It currently has a 305 engine with about 95,000 supposedly original miles on it that runs fine but im not really impressed. I want to begin planning on an engine swap but really don't know much about it. Should i try to have it rebuilt into a 350? Is that even possible? Will i have to rebuilt the transmission too? What about suspension? Are there any resources online where i can do comprehensive research? Any comments and suggestions are welcome. How much am i loking at?
A: The car is an 89--you can do an entire motor swap to a 350--using a Jasper rebuild--warranted for 50000 miles and 3 years--but you still have a tired trans and probably need a suspension update--these are extremely important if you want to really do an old car over--so figure about 6000 for a motor, trans, suspension, brakes, exhaust and front end parts--get a shop to agree to do it all at once--not one thing at a time. The car will be pretty good to drive and cheaper than a new one. please forget beating the car because it has a bigger motor--the car doesn't need to be raced or abused---it is still an 89 and anything can happen--I have always doubled the life of my Suburbans by doing a motor and trans replacement--the brakes and suspension are top notch---the truck is a 99 but I did do all of this to an 84 and an 89 Suburban. Old vehicles get tired and can still be a good base for a rebuild if taken care of properly and getting all the important stuff done. Shop around and get prices to compare--all shops have varied hourly rates---but the real thing to ask is if they are going to have a warranty for all the work you paid for. I always have the dealer do my work--always easier for them to get parts--my truck was always done in 3 days--everyone of them. Just decide on what you want and then give them the car and forget about it until it is done. Good luck
Q: What are the cons with putting 22inch rims on a factory chevy caprice suspension?
I want to put 20's or 22's on my 1993 chevy caprice. I don't want to change a lot of suspension parts or shaving off metal. Can I install 20'or 22's on the car with out worrying about- i know about the pot holes- I just gotta look out for those.
A: your fine putting up to 24 inch rims on that body style caprice... the only downside is your going to get a lil rub when you turn and low series of tires means worse problems with holes and bumps and stuff.... but 22 are fine
Q: Can I use parts from a 1980 chevy caprice on a 1979 caprice?
I have a 1979 chevy caprice classic and I tell you it's hard trying to find parts for it. In parts catalogs they keep skipping the year 1979 and go straight to 1980. I know the body looks the same so can I use the same parts?
Does anyone out there know wher I can get specific 1979 chevy caprice parts from?
A: the body style you are talking about was used from 1977 till 1991. all hoods, trunks, doors interchange although they dropped the 2 door caprice in 1986 . all motors interchange and most other parts too. you will find plenty of these cars in junkyards as they made millions of them
Q: Will a door from a 1989 chevy caprice fit on a 1987 chevy cavalier?
I have a 1987 chevy cavalier and the drivers door is not latching shut. it is rotted on the inside. I found a 1989 chevy caprice online being sold for parts and i want to know if the doors are compatible.
ok, i guess the door won't fit, what about the lock assembly, or the latch thing?
A: No,different car lines,full size and compact.
Q: How do i get the rotors off a 1996 chevy caprice?
I am in the middle of changing the brakes on a 1996 chevy caprice. It is my grandmas car and the brakes have never been changed in the 10 years she has has the car. the rotors are pretty much stuck on and i have no idea how to get them off. do i have to remove a bolt or something?
ok so i got the calipers and the axle nut off. still the rotors wont come off any suggestions>?
A: Grease cap, cotter pin needs to be removed. Large nut on spindle needs to be removed. It would be best to buy a cheap manual if your going to do the job yourself. If you doubt your ability to do this job, then do NOT.
The entire wheel with rotor could fall off if you make a mistake when reinstalling the rotor. Better safe than sorry.
Q: if i use platinum spark plugs on my 1987 chevy caprice will i have to buy some good wires also?
i mean if i buy platinum spark plugs do i have to buy good wires also so it can workout good? cause they say just use regular plugs since its a old car but platinum is better i heard but can i use them on my 87 chevy caprice?
A: Platinum plugs do not reguire special plug wires. However, if you plug wires are old, you should replace them no matter what plugs you have, to ensure the proper current is reaching the plugs. Any name brand plug wire is fine, as long as it is the proper fitted set for you car.
Q: Why is my engine light comming on and off for my '87 Chevy Caprice?
I have a 1987 Chevy Caprice Brougham and the service engine soon light started to come on but when you turn off the car (going in to a store etc.) an start the car again the light is out.
Why would it do that?
Also the passenger’s side mirror will go up and down but not side to side.
Answers would be greatly appreciated.
A: The light coming on is a "oxygen sensor" fixing to go south on you. Don't worry about it.
(On the drivers side of the motor...look down the exhaust pipe from under the hood.....it looks like a spark plug in the tail pipe....and is the same wrench size. When you have time you can replace it your self....in about 3 minutes. That will fix that! Then
The passenger side mirror, if I remember is electric and operated from the drivers side.
The switch has some dirt or soft drink spilled in it.
At "Radio Shack" there is a electrical spray cleaner to clean switches....they call it "TV Tuner Cleaner" and comes with a red small plastic pipe like "WD-40."
Hay just hose it down and work it till its starts making contact and it will work.
(we do this about 3 times a week on different cars, usually always works)
A 87 Caprice Brougham is a "hell-of-a-great" car.
Just for conversation....on some Chevy's the remote on the passenger side has a 4 small cable remote. If you have one of these (doubtfully) with your hand turn the mirror all the way down and in.....then look behind the mirror. With "WD-40" spray the end of the cable housing where the cables come out. Soak it good so the oil will run down into the cable housing.
Then work the mirror with your hand back and forth till it feels really easy. Do the oil thing two or three times, working it back and forth each time. Then it will be better than new, for another 20 years......Its a Chevy ! It will be working 50 years from today!
Keep the "tuner cleaner" around for the window and seat switches.....one small spray can is a life time supply for your car, and will keep it working for you.

Q: Does anyone know good websites where i can buy parts for a 1977 two door Chevy Caprice?
My husband need tohe entire inside door panel for a 77* Chevy Caprice... Both sides.
And i've been busting my ass looking lol but no real Luck =(
I figured since we live in Miami I'd go search the junk yards...
What do you guys think?
A: The best source for those cars are actual junkyards. The are very rare when compared to the four door versions. The aftermarket does not really support the "Box" Caprices and Impala. EBAY is something to check on DAILY just like your email. I would make friends with someone in a nice climate that frequents junkyards i.e. ME!! I have seen two out here in Texas. But they are pretty dogged out also. You may have to take it to a custom upholsterer to build new panels and cover them. Not cheap but very nice when done right.
Q: Will the under dash wire harness from a 1994 Chevy Caprice work on a 1996 Chevy Impala?
I want to take almost everything off my chevy caprice and put it on my chevy impala.
A: yes it will, those are basically the same car almost, but the harness will interchange on those two, good luck.
Q: What are the stock rear end gears in a 68 chevy caprice 4dr?
I have a 68 4dr chevy caprice w/ 327. The engine is bored 30over hi performance cam, Compression is 9 to 1 nice carb. I'm trying to upgrade the gears but I do not know how to pick the right gear size.
A: They were available with 3.700, 3.550, 3.360, & 2.730 axle ratios. You can get an estimate by jacking up the rear, disconnecting the driveshaft, and rotating the rear driving wheel, if it's an open diff., 360 degrees. Count the pinion rotations and that will give you a ballpark idea. If the pinion rotates 3 1/2 time per wheel rotation, it's likely a 3.55, and so on.
Q: Where is the timing mark scale on 1987 chevy caprice?
I am trying to adjust the timing to a 1987 chevy caprice but i can not find the timing mark scale. Chilton says in front of engine but i can not find it anywhere. Any ideas?
A: The timing mark is behind the crank pulley on the harmonic balancer ( the biggest and main pulley right above the front of your oil pan. You may have to look under side of the car to see it. it's just a small notch cut into it. mark it with white chalk or crayon. The timing tab to match it to is right under your water pump to the drivers side or right behind the water pump center of the timing cover.
Q: why does the 1967 chevy impala look like the 1967 chevy caprice?
why does the 1967 chevy impala look like the 1967 chevy caprice? they look exactly the same? why? whats the difference? is there a difference?
A: Back in the day the big Chevy's shared the same basic body. The Caprice was a higher trim level than the Impala. They do the same thing today but instead of calling them Caprice's and Impala's the trim packages are referred to as LS or LT.
Q: how do you put in a ingnition module for a 1994 chevy caprice?
I have a 1994 chevy caprice and it wont crack all the lights come on and everything but it wont crank, and I need to know were it is located also.
A: Remove the distributor cap, the rotor, and you will be able to get to it. It has wires on both sides of it, so use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the wires before you remove the module. You must take care to not break these wires, or you will have a hard time fixing them. Grab the wires on the part that plugs on to the module, and pry them off. This is probably done easier with the module still mounted to the distributor. Take note of where these wires go, so you can go back the same. Remove the two screws that hold the module in place, and clean the mounting surface with a rag to make sure you have it clean. Plug the wires back on to the new module, rub a good coat of dielectric grease (heat sink) on the bottom of the module where it meshes up to the distributor. Don't over do it, but put a good enough coat on it in an even layer, so it will make a good heat sink to the distributor housing. This is a must, or it will burn the new one up. They get pretty hot, and this stuff helps it dissipate the heat. Install the screws that mount it, and don't crank down on them, as they will break off so easy. Run them down just snug, and evenly, and they will be just fine. Install the rotor, the cap, and your back in business.
Glad I could help you. Good Luck!!!
