Q: My 2001 dodge ram idles high when i first start it- should i be worried?
i live in mn, and when i start it(2001 dodge ram 1500 V8 5.2L 2WD) after its been sitting outside all night in subzero temps it revs quite high compared to it being warmed up. after about 10-20 minutes of being warm it idles normally. i do not remember if it did this in the warmer months but is this caused due to the cold? or could there be something wrong? thanks
A: Completely normal.
The computer will have the engine idle higher when cold in an attempt to warm things up faster.
As long as it settles down to normal once it's reached operating temperature you've got no problem.

A: not sure about the turbo (size engine 5.9L?). but do cams, gears, throttle body, power wire, ported heads, pulleys, etc you can still do a lot to your truck dude. hit dodgetalk.com we're always modding our trucks and love to help each other out :D
Q: What company or resource will convert my 2001 Dodge Ram into a Plug in Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) with solar power?
I have a...
2001 Dodge Ram V8 5.9 Liter
And I want to add solar panels on top of the truck bed where they can extend up to the height of the cab so I can get maximum sunlight and also make more room for cargo. Preferably Lithium-Ion batteries. I would love to go 300 miles on a single charge and also is there a way to recharge in under an hour?
A: Yes it is possible. Many people have done it in some states. But the 300 mile range is a dream for a conversion and solar only extends your mileage slightly. You could leave parked for a week to charge up enough for a trip.
Before spending any money go to your DMV and ask how you would register such a vehicle. I looked into doing a conversion a couple of years ago here in Mass. I found out that modified vehicles need to go through a state police inspection. But that conversions (meaning to electric) would not be considered. Basically telling me flat out No Way. I also checked with the insurance company and they didn't have a clue on how to insure it even if I could get it registered in Mass.
Mass also has yearly emission inspections. The VIN indicates an internal combustion engine so how do you measure emissions on an electric vehicle when the automated inspection computer expects to "see" exhaust gas?
I also looked into getting a Zap Zebra. At the time Mass would not let me register a new one if I bought it in New hampshire. I would have to have NH plates. One reason for not registering the Zebra was it was a three wheeled two passenger vehicle. Being multi passenger was apparently the deal killer. The DMV would let me register a 50K single seat three wheeled car from Meyers Motors (the Nmg).
Mass has since allowed Zap Zebras to be registered.

If you run into any of these issues with your DMV you can always repair an original electric car. Just buy an electric ford ranger and retro fit new batteries, motor and electronics. The VIN for such a vehicle indicates electric power so you as avoid inspection issues.
Although the Zebra is in my price range I haven't bough one as its top speed is 35 MPH with a 23 mile range. My commute is 13 miles one way and there are a couple of miles of raod where the speed limit is 45MPH. If the range were a little more I could avoid the 45MPH section but without being able to charge it at work I wouldn't be able to reliably do a round trip.
A pickup truck conversion is very doable and you can get much faster speeds and longer ranges using standard batteries.. If I could have put one on the road I would have converted my Sonoma a year ago.
Q: Replacing Injector Pump on a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel?
I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Cumins Turbo Diesel. I need to replace the injector pump. I have a good idea of what I'm doing, but am looking for some tips or things to look out for.
A: Set pump at TDC before removing, make sure shaft is dry and clean when going back up with it

Q: Will the heated power mirrors off a 2001 Dodge Ram fit on a 1997 Ram?
MY 97 ram has chrome power mirrors, they are broken. I found a set off a 2001 Ram that are black plastic. They are also heated, which mine are not. Could anyone tell me if they will bolt on my 97 Ram with existing mounting holes and if the plug in connectors will work?
A: Yes and no; they will mount properly but you would have to have the heated mirror feature wired in.
Q: Will a 285/70r16 fit on a stock 2001 dodge ram 1500 2wd without rubbing?
I have a 2wd dodge ram 1500 2001 i was wondering if a 285 size tire will fit without rubbing?
A: I run 265/70/16 on my 1998 with no rubbing; remember at some point (I don't know it) the tire width will exceed the standard rim width for safety whether it rubs or not.
The vehicle sticker just shows what the vehicle comes with as standard and what THE MAN recommends; my truck looked like a toy with the 225/75/16's!
Q: About how many miles can you get out of a 2000-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4?
How many miles can you get out of a 2000-2001 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4, before having some serous problems?
A: I drive a 1996 Ram 4x4 with 227,000 miles. I rebuilt the transmission at 186,000 and replaced the rear wheel bearings and front hubs last month. About every 2 years the fuel pump quits working. Other than that it has been only normal maintenance and a few oddball little things. The engine is still strong with good compression. My truck hauls ladders and scaffold, pulls a trailer and frequently drives off road so it doesn't get the easy life of most 1/2 ton pickups. It's first rust holes showed themselves this year. I expect it to last 2-3 more years before the rust destroys the body. The best thing you can do for that (and any) truck is don't neglect the recommended maintenance, especially with the automatic transmission.
Q: what size engine does this 2001 dodge ram have?
Im looking for a truck and Ive found this 2001 dodge ram 1500 with a V8. A: http://dodgeram.info/2001/engines.html <---- this link shows you the possible engines that where in these trucks. You need to look at the sticker under the hood for the engine size. unless it is badged on the side of the truck.

Q: On that 2001 Dodge Ram 5.9 4x4, what should I expect to pay to have the same tranny rebuilt?
I thank you all for taking the time and responding to my questions, I also would like everyone to know this is the first problem of any kind I've had with this truck. My next pickup will also be a Dodge Ram. If you can't Dodge it Ram it. Again thanks for your help and have a great day.
A: about half of what the dealer would charge you if you use a reputable mom and pop shop. and they may have a better warranty

i have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 and just got 40/17/15 tires and was wondering what size rims i would need?

Q: just wondering if any 2001 dodge ram 1500 owners dont have any problems with the trans?
About 3 weeks ago i bought a 2001 dodge 1500... went to the dealership with intention to buy another truck to find out it was out of my price range.. so the salesman point this one out very nice truck and seems to work ok...ive talked to a few dodge 1500 owners and they all said something about transmission problems... is there any preventative measures i could take to maybe protect my wallet?
A: if you,ll change the fluid and filter in it every 30-36 thousand miles you wont have so many problems from it, some problems like the tcm units cant be prevented ,even with good maintenance on them, but most repairs can be avoided with good regular maintenance, electrical problems will happen with it and have to be dealt with as they pop up,but for the most part they don't give to many problems,a dodge is no different than any other vehicle is they all have to be maintained to make them last good, its just that some people think a dodge is indestructible then when it tears up they don't know what to do,all vehicles, dodge included will give problem's if you neglect them, good luck.
Q: What would cause a squelling noise while driving a 2001 dodge ram 1500 2wd?
A squeeling noise while driving that just started recently and it goes away when the brake is pressed.
Thanks for the replies. Would these break wear indicators make their squell when the brake is being pressed or when the brake is released. The squell i am hearing now is only when the brake is not being used as soon as i press the brake pedal the squell goes away.
A: brake pads have a squealers on them when pads get low, check and replace your brake pads
Q: What causes a whistling noise in a 2001 dodge ram 1500?
I've heard it could be a tensor pulley or something like that...Could it be that or something else?
A: if your sitting still it can be a vacuum hose causing this too happen and i have seen some that would do it while you was driving them because of a bad seal between the hood and the body of the truck,i own a 01 ram sport and when the rear seal went bad for the hood it would whistle while you was driving it at certain speeds, look for any loose lines on it and verify that all th cowl seals are good on it,a tensioner will make more of a squealing noise than a whistling noise, good luck.
