Q: How do I jump start my GMC pickup truck?
I've jump started a car before but there's a big cover over the battery of my pickup truck with two electrodes sticking out. Do I need to remove that cover before I apply the jumper cables or can I just apply the two cables to the grey bolts that stick out of the cover? Also, can a GMC Sierra be jumpstarted by a Toyota Corolla or is a larger vehicle needed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A: well if the bolts sticking out are the positive and negative battery terminals, then just hook positive to positive and negative to negative, and you can use a toyota, just let it charge for a few minutes before you try to start it

Q: What can you tell me about a 1991 GMC Asplundh bucket truck?
My aunt just called me with a question about this, and she wants me to find out something. The thing is someone bought a 1991 GMC Asplundh bucket truck, and something about the lines or the boom or something is messed up. No one in his vicinity works on them, and he wants to know what to do. If this helps any, the model number is LBM50, and the serial number is 910195, topkick. How can he put the stuff back together? He says it needs to be lined up correctly, but he doesn't know how, and I don't know anything about it. Please help!

A: used to work for asplundh,,the truck is probably a telect manufactured bucket unit,,the hoses were usually the problem as they would over time rub and get cut where the pivot points are,,preplanned parts and service,,,the hoses are a non-conductive type and you have to use whats left of the old hose to snake the new hose into the boom,,if you pull the bad hose out first you are really screwwed,,its impossible to shove 60 plus feet of new hose into both sections and it go all the way through,,find a areal platform mechanic or get in touch with telect industries, for your closest distributor,,they can fix what ever is wrong with it,,

Q: What is the difference between a Chevy and GMC pickup?
both Chevy and GMC pickups seem to be the same. What is the difference between a Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon? What is the difference between a Chevy full size pickup such as a 1500 and a GMC? Aren't GMC pickups and Chevy pickups the same?

A: The biggest difference is the grilles and hoods. The GMC uses a more open grille where the Chevy has a bar that goes through it for the "bowtie". They have different appearance packages with the top of the line Chevy being and LTZ and the GMC being the Denali. They also use different suspension parts on some models with the GMC having a little softer ride. They both get about the same gas mileage and the resale values are very comparable. The GMC has tried to become the "classier" of the two in the past few years having nicer interiors and more chrome on the outside.

Q: What are some of differences between the GMC Sierra and a Chevrolet Silverado?
Like performance wise, looks, cost? And like GMC has a truck called Sierra Denali but does Chevy have on similar to that?

A: G6er: There was never a Cobalt GT. For the most part, the Silverado and Sierra are the same. The Sierra is generally more upscale than the Silverado, but nonetheless uses the same drivetrain and many body parts. The only difference looks-wise is the badging, front end and wheels. The GMC does cost more than the Chevy as well, and has a more upscale interior. Performance is similar, but as you mentioned GMC has the Sierra Denali, which is akin to the Silverado LTZ.

Q: How do wire a starter for a 1950 GMC truck?
I am changing the starter in my 1950 GMC truck from a floor starter to a key. Also changing from a generator to a 1 wire alternator. I have an old wiring diagram that I found online but doesn't seem to be correct. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A: The floor starter for the old classics are something that can be changed out if you update everything to 12v negative ground system and it would be the only way for the 1 wire alt to work also. I have done this to my 62 Econoline van. I pulled all the old alternator wires off and disconnected them and capped them off. Then the 1 wire Delco Remy alt needed a few spacers to fit up and it works great, single 10ga red wire ran to positive on battery. I recommend a 10ga ground wire from the alt bracket to chassis ground also. 1 Wire alternator are known to burn up from having a bad connection. The starting thing is more preference for you, but I have seen some install a push button to aid in starting these oldies.

Q: How hard is it to replace the rear crankshaft oil seal on a 1993 GMC Sonoma pickup?
My 1993 GMC Sonoma pickup has suddenly developed a massive oil leak. It is coming from the back of the engine. I believe it is the rear oil seal. I cant really tell there is so much oil all on the under carriage of the truck. It has just started and can use about a quart and a half in 50 miles of driving. It also has three codes showing. 13, 34, and 44. What would cause this? It has suddenly started drinking gas like crazy.

A: The trouble to replace the seal is you have to pull the transmission and the flywheel. A bad seal would not make your truck start using gas though. Something else must have failed to cause the oil leak and the gas usage. I wonder if your cam thrust face could have pushed out the rear cam plug allowing oil to spray out the back into the bellhousing and to alter the ignition timing to the extent you are getting bad gas mileage. Is the truck still running properly? It seems like you would notice a big change in the performance if the ignition timing was to suddenly get a good bit off.

Q: How do you check the transmission fluid in a 1978 GMC Sierra?
I have a 1978 GMC Sierra with manual shift transmission and I need to push the clutch all the way to the ground before it changes gears. Do I just need tranny fluid? If so, where do I check the fluid? Are there other potential problems I need to look out for?

A: There is a fill plug in the side of the case. Remove it and stick your finger or a bent length of insulated wire in to check for fluid. The proper amount is up to the bottom of the hole. If the clutch is out of adjustment you will need to replace some linkage parts. I wouldn't bother with junk yard parts. They will be worn too.
