Q: How much does it cost to paint a vw bug?
I am looking into buy a 1967 vw beetle. Before I do I want to know what it would cost to paint an older one or just put the money I would put into the paint on a nicer, already painted one. Does any one know how much it cost to paint a vw beetle (remember on vw bugs you have to paint the interior as well) by a professional.

A: First off the 1967 bug was a good one. If you have found a nice bug but simply lacks the paint, then consider the cost of the paint as cheap insurance as the value of your car will substantially increase with a new paint job and continue to increase as the years pass. It does not work that way for all beetles. For example a 73 or 74 beetle will almost always have body rot on the rear end because of design flaws and the dashboard was less appealing. So.. back to your question.. Paint jobs are a function of the skill of the person doing it. There are people that can use spray cans and give you a great job and others with power units and drying booths that can never get it done right. So look at what your painter as done as a part of deciding who you want to paint it. Also, the area where you live reflects the cost of the paint job. Out here on the west coast a $1000 paint job may be 'ok' (not great but ok) while in the midwest that same job may only cost $700 or so because the cost of doing business is much less. So.. given that as a starting point, I had my bug painted last year for a 'little better then ok'. That means I personally stripped all of the chrome off (an easy thing to do on bugs) rather then have it masked, and removed the inside door panels (so the color change would include the doors) and drove it down to the painter. He did a job with two plus coats of color and three coats of clear epoxy coat, for around $1200. Looks great and gets comments all the time. .. which ever way you go, you WILL enjoy your bug so congrats... .

Q: VW Jetta is slow to accelerate and is running rough, what could the problem be?
I have a 96 VW Jetta. Lately it's been running rough when I accelerate from a stop. It will sometimes accelerate slower than normal, and jerk a bit as I get up to speed. At other times it's fine/normal. I can't predict when it will do this. I worried it's a symptom that will lead to a bigger problem. Any ideas on what this could be and how I could fix it?

A: It could possibly be the fuel pump. That would be one of the worst cases though I would a) replace spark plugs (way cheap) b) run some lucas upper cylinder lubricant/fuel injector cleaner through your gas tank ( a lot of it. don't get the cheaper brands of fuel injector cleaner ONLY lucas trust me) c) check all your spark plug wires and connections d) oil change e) air filter change if none of that works, check distributor and rotor and after that it would probably be the fuel pump. Buy one yourself, and then take it to an honest mechanic Easy install dont let them rob you.

Q: Why does my VW Passat make a clicking noise when starting up the engine?
I have a VW Passat 98. When the engine is cold and I start it up, it makes a clacking noise for approximatly 2 to 3 minutes. If I fire it up and pull away to drive, when I change gears the cliacking noise gets louder with every rev. After the engine has become warm the noise disappears. Can anyone help me reguarding this problem? Thanks.

A: THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER IS WARMING UP.

Q: How do you differentiate a german mad vw bug from a mexican made vw beetle?
I want to buy a vw beetle but I wanted a german made one. pls help me to identify it.

A: Most early VWs you find will be German made. Mexican beetles maintained the 58-64 body style up to 1970, so that should be a dead giveaway. Although bugs were made in Mexico up to recent years, you won't find any in the US after 1979 (i believe), and they cannot be registered because of safety regulations.

I just picked up a 96 VW Cabriolet convertible and it needs a engine. What year will work and what other VW's can it come out of. And will the new engine need to be from a auto trans car? Thanks Engine in the car is a 2.0 with a auto trans I do want to keep the original auto trans in the car and i do not want to change the engine size, just keep it stock.

A: Your car needs an ABA 2.0 4 cyl motor. The motor was made from 93-2002.. 1996 is a newer model - but the core engine is the same.. and will bolt up. See this page for more help. http://faculty.ccp.edu/faculty/dreed/Campingart/jettatech/index.htm

Q: What is the major difference between a 2010 VW Passat and a 2010 Audi A4?
Hello folks. I wanted to see if anyone could tell me the "significant" differences between a 2010 VW Passat and a 2010 Audi A4 (non quattro). I am in the market for a new car and I am considering the the A4 but several people have mentioned that it is just a very luxurious sporty Passat and even has the same engine. Is this true? Can someone elaborate if possible?

A: I'd go for an audi if the price difference isn't that great. The major difference is in handling and smoother ride. Specially if you intend to go on long trips, the audi is more comfortable after a long trip and less tiring. I cannot tell if its the smoother suspension, seats, or what. Thats my opinion.

Q: What is the name of the movie about the orphans that are driving a vw bug?
It is an older movie with these 4 kids that take there deceased mother's vw bug and are like driving across the desert. I know they stop at this gas station and one of the younger kids wins money on a slot machine. They ran away because they did not want to get split up. I think an old lady might be telling the story and there is something about a wedding cake. I think the cover has like a setting sun and the 4 kids walking or something.

A: man i know that movie i cant remember the name i keep thinking on our own or something like that but i cant remember my grandma has the movie but i cant get her to answer the phone this is gonna drive me nuts ill try to figure it out and get back to you http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095778/ i was right its called on our own your right about the cover but on the site above they have a diffrent pic for it just read the summery on it.

Q: Does the transmission on an old VW need to match up with the engine?
I have an old VW rail Buggy in which the bell housing on the transmission was cracked and I'd like to replace it. Do I need to match up the numbers off the engine to match a transmission to it or was it standardized? Both engine and tansmission are older and were taken out of a 1960's to 70's VW Beetle. The transmission is a 4 speed and the engine is a 4 cylinder.

A: This is a great question. You can bolt up any air cooled beetle engine to any early transmission. Two things you need to watch out for. First, if you have a 12 volt flywheel, make sure the trans you get is also from a 12 volt or you will need to clearance the bell housing and get a new starter. Second, make sure the throw out bearing, clutch and pressure match the transmission. Both early and late style will bolt on to the fly wheel. Here is a link to a video showing both early and late style pressure plates and throw out bearings. Have fun in your buggy.

Or are they coming out with a new van this year? Thanks! No, not the routan. It looked like the old VW bus, only new. The one with the flat front.

Q: Is there any hope VW is building its own van to replace the Chrysler Stepchild?
Is there any hope VW is building its own van to replace the Chrysler Stepchild?

A: Not that we have heard. They had a concept version but it was cheaper to have Chrysler build it in Canada on the caravan platform.

Q: how to fill and check the transmission fluid on a VW Jetta?
I have a VW Jetta 1997 with an automatic transmission. I want to know how to check and fill the Automatic transmission fluid. VW Jetta does not have a dip stick for the transmission.

A: Start the Jetta's engine and wait for it to warm up. When the needle on the water temperature gauge sits between the upper and lower mark on the gauge, the engine is sufficiently warm. Open the hood and pull the looped handle out of the backside of the engine. This is the transmission dipstick, which sits in the transmission filler neck. Wipe off the end of the dipstick and put it all the way back into the transmission filler neck. Pull the dipstick back out of the filler neck and check the transmission fluid level. The fluid level should sit between the upper and lower marks on the bottom end of the dipstick. If you need to add any fluid, you will need a funnel and you fill through the dipstick tube. ADDITIONAL DETAILS >>> Check plug is on driver side of transmission about halfway up. It has an indent in it that you can put the head of a bolt in. Fill till fluid runs out of plug hole

Q: How can you tell what engine you have in a 1969 VW Bug?
I just bought a 69 VW Bug today, and the guy I bought it from believes it to be a 1600 dual port. Is there a engine code # to look for, or can you tell by just looking at it? Thanks in advance!

A: I think '69's came stock with single port heads. The cars came with no "badges" describing single or dual ports- For visual clues as to what you have, look at the intake manifold- is it a 3 piece manifold where there are aluminum "end pieces" bolted to each head? THAT'D be a dual port manifold, dual port heads. Single port manifolds just bolt directly to the head with no additional parts in between. For more info, check out wikipedia. Good luck with your new Bug!
